The ecological disaster arranged by the occupiers in Ukraine became a topic for discussions at “EU Green Week 2024”

In the final days of May, the main environmental conference of the EU – “EU Green Week 2024” – was traditionally held. This year, the key topic for discussion and debate is water. Of course, in the European Union, as everywhere in the world, the issue of clean water is quite acute. Because this is the category of living environment on the planet, on which the very survival of our species really depends. Therefore, EU politicians, non-governmental organizations, and experts in ecology and natural resources were interested in discussing this issue. Among the special speakers were: Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for the European Green Deal – Maroš Šefčovič and representatives of the General Directorate for the Environment of the European Commission – Florika Fink-Hooijer and Veronika Manfredi.

In 2023, the issue of water came up catastrophically in Ukraine. The Russian occupiers blew up the Kakhovskaya HPP, causing the water to rise 11 meters in a matter of hours and flood more than 80 villages and towns. When the flood receded, thousands of hectares of land turned into a natural disaster zone. We will remind that the Kakhovka HPP was the last, lower link of the cascade of Dnipro hydroelectric plants, due to its destruction, thousands of hectares of land in the south of Ukraine will remain without irrigation systems and will slowly become desertified. And the problem of drinking water in the southern regions of Ukraine will become extremely acute. The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ruslan Strelets, spoke frankly about this at the conference. The expert jury of “EU Green Week 2024” took this problem very seriously, and specialists from the EU are already looking for ways to prevent this natural disaster.

The “RUTENIA” team, which was part of the Ukrainian delegation at “EU Green Week 2024”, actively worked on the sidelines of the event. First of all, we presented our partners – one of the few high-quality English-language publications in Ukraine: “The Ukrainian Review”. The magazine tells news from Ukraine in a language understandable to Europeans (and it’s not just about writing words). In addition, the girls from “RUTENIA” directly met interesting people from the ecological environment of Europe, with whom we are already planning to start several interesting projects for the future.
